Metrology deals with testing, measuring and gaging.
  • Testing is to compare a specific property of an object with the expected property (e.g. dimension, color). The comparison can take place by measuring and by calibrating.

  • Measuring is the numerical comparison of a known quantity (nominal quantity) with the quantity to be measured (measured quantity). The measurement of geometric quantities can be done either by using conventional measuring equipment, such as slide gages or external micrometers, or by using coordinate measuring machines.
  • Gaging is to determine whether the part dimension exceeds the tolerance limits. A go gage and a no go gage are used to check whether the property to be checked is within the tolerance limits. The magnitude of deviation is not determined!
