Geometric elements in space can be symmetrical to one another, with respect to an axis or a plane:
Symmetry with respect to an axis Symmetry with respect to a plane
   
  • In the left example, the two axes of the cylinder are symmetrical with respect to a third axis (or a third plane).
      
  • In the right example, the two inclined areas (= planes) are symmetrical with respect to a third plane. These symmetries can be checked mathematically by means of a computer.
